Happy Halloween! I hope everyone enjoys trick or treating tomorrow night. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. I’d love to see pictures of the kids in their Halloween costumes if anyone would like to tweet them to me @MrsLowery2. I’ll be sure to post a picture of my boys all dressed up for trick or treating.
We had a great time with Red Ribbon week and learning to be safe and stay drug free this week. The kick off assembly with the Alpharetta Police Officers and their canine officer was a big hit with everyone!
Thursday was our fall graphing activity and it was a great way to start reviewing what we know about graphs for the upcoming Math test on Thursday, Nov. 5. Thank you so much to everyone who donated supplies and their time to help us put some fall fun into graphing!
Next week is our first field trip of 2nd grade! Thank you so much for sending in donations and permissions slips. We really appreciate the support. We will be heading to the teaching museum to see a Junie B. Jones play. I love reading those books and I can’t wait to see the play! I have the orange field day shirts here at school that the kids will put on Friday before we leave for the field trip. After that they will come home with the students. If your child did not order one, we have extras here that they can use. Please remember to send lunch in a brown bag. We will throw everything away at the Teaching Museum. Next Thursday a reminder list will come home to help you make sure your child is prepared for the field trip.
We will be heading to the media center on Thursday for our next skills lesson with Ms. Bercher. We are going two weeks in a row due to book fair which is coming up soon. Please help your child remember to bring in their books on Thursday so that they can check out new books if they would like.
Homework for the week
Monday- Thursday- Read 10 minutes and log. Reading logs are due on Friday.
Tuesday- Graphing homework- my math class only
Wednesday- Compound work practice
Thursday- No homework- Get ready for field trip fun!
Math
Unit two is coming to an end. The test is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5. This past Wednesday a study guide came home to help the children prepare for the test. If they can understand and solve the types of problems on the study guide then they are ready for the test.
Monday and Tuesday we will focus on making graphs and then using our classmate’s graphs to answer questions about the graphs.
Wednesday will be a review day. Students will be divided into groups and practice the skills they will need to know for the test.
Please make sure to reread some of my previous blogs for a more in depth explanation of each math standard and some more practice problems you can work on with your students.
Writing
Our first author’s celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3. The students are so excited to share their published pieces of writing with each other and of course they can’t wait for the yummy treats! Thank you so much to everyone who is donating treats for our author’s celebration.
After our celebration on Tuesday we will begin preparing for our next writing unit. We will be moving on to informational writing. This unit ties in so nicely with our reading. Students will be able to take what they are studying about reading informational books and put those skills to use when writing informational books. Wednesday and Thursday will be our informational writing preassessment. This will help me see where each student is in their informational writing and know how to guide them throughout the unit.
Our grammar skill next week will focus on compound words. We will discuss how to use the word parts to find out the meanings of words.
Social Studies/Science
Tuesday, Nov. 3 is our Social Studies test on Georgia’s Beginnings. A study guide came home on Tuesday and I will also be sending home a lot of the activities we did in class over the past few weeks. Please use all of these materials to help your child prepare for the test.
Wednesday we will begin our next Science unit, causes of change. In this unit of study, second graders will learn how to observe changes and infer the causes of change. The world is changing everyday. Changes are made by weather, plants, animals, and/or people. These changes directly affect the everyday life of the earth's inhabitants.
S2E3 - Students will observe and record changes in their surroundings and infer the causes of the changes.
S2E3.a - Recognize effects that occur in a specific area caused by weather, plants, animals, and/or people.
There are many great experiments that go along with this unit, so your child will have a chance to participate in those.
Reading
In reading we will continue to review and practice the skills of answering questions, and main idea. We will also move on and beginning talking about text features. Students will be introduced to the variety of text features that can be found in an informational book, and we will learn how these text features can help us understand and learn more from nonfiction books.
One skill that we have been working hard on and continuing to practice is going back and using the text to help us answer questions. Many students in their eagerness to complete their assignments try to think of answers just using what they can remember from their reading of the text. We have talked, reviewed and practiced rereading the text and finding exactly what the book or article says before answering the question. Please encourage your children to take their time on assignments and to use all the resources available to them to do their best always!
Have a wonderful weekend!
