Math
Monday, February 1 is our next math quiz. The students will be expected to apply the skills we have learned in this math unit to solve word problems. If the students were able to do their math homework on Tuesday and Thursday then they will be ready to take the quiz. I will also remind them to take their math notebooks home this weekend to help them prepare.
Tuesday we will begin the last part of our math unit. We will review money and graphs. Students will learn how to solve word problems using money, bar graphs, and money graphs.
The study guide for the math test will come home next week. As I did for the last unit I will send home a blank copy as well as a copy with the answers. This does not need to be turned back in. It is for the students to use to prepare for the test. The unit 4 test is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Standards:
2.MD.10 - Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
2.MD.8 - Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ (dollars) and ¢ (cents) symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
Writing
Next week we will continue writing our book nominations. Our lessons will focus on leads and closings. The students will learn how to write and introduction for their opinion writing and how to end their opinion writings. Toward the end of the week I will take a classwork grade on how well they write openings and closings.
Next week we will also take a Write Score assessment on opinion writing. This is not a graded assessment, more of a way to gather information on how the students are doing in their writing progression.
In grammar we will continue to work on past tense verbs.
Standards:
W.2.1 - Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
L.2.1.d - Conventions of Standard English: Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told).
Health
We will continue to think about ways to feel and be health. This will include how to avoid illness, eating health, and dental health.
Standards:
HE2.4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks
HE2.7 - Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks
Reading
Next week in reading we will continue to compare and contrast two texts on the same topic.
Standards:
RI.2.3 - Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.
RI.2.8 - Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
RI.2.9 - Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
Have a great weekend!
