We had another great week of learning in Mrs. Lowery's class this week! We have officially started our 2nd grade curriculum in all subjects and I have already seen so much learning going on every day.
Reminders for next week.
Homework-
Monday- Wednesday- Reading log- Due on Thursday.
Tuesday- Math word problem homework
Wednesday- Expanding sentence practice sheet.
Tuesday- Media Center- Please have children bring back any books they would like to return so they can check out new books.
Wednesday- Picture day! Everyone will get their picture taken for the year book.
Wednesday- Curriculum Night- It begins at 6:20pm in the cafeteria.
Friday- No school for students.
Math
This week we worked on subtraction with regrouping. The quiz on this skill will be on Monday.
After the quiz we will spend the rest of the week applying the addition and subtraction skills we have learned to solving different types of word problems.
Standards-
2.OA.1 - Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
2.NBT.9 - Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. (Explanations may be supported by drawings or objects.)
Reading
This week we began our first fiction reading unit. Children grow so much as readers in 2nd grade and this week we learned some important skills and strategies we will use all year to help us with this growth.
We learned how to take a "grown up" sneak peek of our books to help us decide how we want to read a book. Then we learned how to use our snap words (words we can read quickly and easily) to help us scoop up larger portions of the text. We also talked about how it is important for readers to stop, think and retell every few pages to make sure they are comprehending all the different parts of a story. We used some awesome hand motions to help us remember all these skills- make sure to ask your child to show you the hand motions and how they use these skills while they are reading.
Next week we begin by using post it to mark important places in our books that we want to remember or share with a partner. Tuesday we will have a quiz that shows how the students are applying their skills while reading a text. Toward the end of the week we will begin talking about the skills and strategies that students can use when they get to a tricky word. As students grow in their reading levels they will begin to find unfamiliar words and it is important that they have the tools in their reading tool box to tackle any new words.
Standards:
RL.2.5 - Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
RL.2.7 - Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
RF.2.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
RF.2.4 - Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Writing
This week we began our unit on small moment stories. Students chose something important and meaningful that has happened to them to write about. We created an idea file to help us as we write multiple stories throughout the unit, learned how to narrow down our stories to one small moment, practiced using our fingers to plan, and learned how to zoom in on the details in our story to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.
We will continue to practice these skills next week as well as work on our beginnings and endings, using a checklist to set writing goals, and applying what we learned about 5 star sentences to our writing. At the end of next week students will turn in one writing piece for a classwork grade to show me their progress in this first unit.
In grammar next week we will play off of the idea of adding details to our writing and learn how to expand our sentences.
Standards
W.2.3 - Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
L.2.1.f - Conventions of Standard English: Produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences (e.g., The boy watched the movie; The little boy watched the movie; The action movie was watched by the little boy).
Social Studies
This week we began our unit on landforms and regions in Georgia. We focused on the vocabulary words that we would be using throughout the unit.
If you would like to review this vocabulary with your child here is a power point with each word, a picture and the definition. landforms.pptx
Next week we will learn about the 5 regions of Georgia.

Students will be expected to identify and locate the five regions. We will learn about the regions next week and there will be a quiz after Labor Day.
Have a great weekend!
